46% of vehicles checked in 2015 had at least one warning

My Car Check provide car checks (also known as HPI checks, reg checks and provenance checks) which alert buyers to possible problems with a vehicle. By entering the vehicle’s VRM (reg number), important information such as if the car has been written off, is stolen or has outstanding finance against it, is provided.  This information allows the buyer to negotiate a better deal, or to avoid the vehicle altogether, crucially, before they agree to buy the vehicle.  If you don’t do this or it’s not on your radar, our advice is always to do it, it’s better to know the car is clean than it has issues.

From all car checks carried out on the My Car Check website in 2015, the report found:

  • 3.3 million vehicles sold each year in the UK have a warning
  • Top searched manufacturers: Ford (12.2%), Vauxhall (10.8%), Volkswagen (9.6)..
  • Top searched models: Ford Fiesta Zetec (9.3%), Mini Cooper (8.5%), VW Golf GT TDI (6.5%).
  • Nearly half (46%) of all vehicles checked in 2015 had at least one warning
  • Top three warnings: plate transfer (48%), write-off (29%), finance (13%).
  • The average value of a vehicle searched in 2015 was £7,632
  • 65.7% of Land Rovers had at least one warning, the highest of all manufacturers
  • Land Rover also had the highest proportion of stolen warnings (under 1%)
  • 11.7% of all Audis checked had outstanding finance warnings
  • Honda had the highest proportion of write-off warnings at 19.4%.

In addition:

  • 48% of My Car Check customers prefer to buy privately, rather than from dealers.
  • 48% of My Car Check customers buy a used car every two to three years.
  • 96% of My Car Check customers check before buying the vehicle.
  • 74% of My Car Check trade customers check before deciding whether to inspect a car.
