Donington Historic Festival to celebrate 90th anniversary of Motor Sport Magazine with a pre-war sports car race

A fantastic array of racing cars from the 1920s and 1930s will battle it out on the track at this year’s Donington Historic Festival (May 3rd, 4th, 5th) in a pre-War sports car race to mark the 90th anniversary of Motor Sport magazine.DHF2014_Master_logo_medium

Organised by Motor Racing Legends, the Motor Sport 90th Anniversary Trophy will be a double-header, held on the Sunday and Monday of the Festival. Each part will last 30 minutes, and include pit-stops, to evoke that true period feel and memories of the earliest days of the magazine and of racing at Donington Park.

With a grid that’s likely to feature such legendary marques as Bentley, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Frazer Nash, BMW, Vauxhall, Riley, MG and Talbot, it promises to be enormously entertaining. These cars might not boast the straight-line speed of later racing machines, but the exhilarating wheel-to-wheel action, the sight and sound of narrow tyres scrabbling for grip and the spectacle of drivers wrestling with huge steering wheels should prove unforgettable.

Event founder Duncan Wiltshire said: “This is the race that links the history of Donington Park to the Festival and to be able to celebrate the 90th birthday of Motor Sport is perfect. We’ll have cars on the grid from the year that the magazine was founded, and we’ll make a big paddock feature of the cars between races.”

The magazine’s editor Damien Smith said: “It’s entirely fitting that we should celebrate this notable anniversary with a race, at one of Britain’s oldest circuits, for sporting cars dating back to our first year of publication. Founder editor Bill Boddy would surely have approved.”
