275mph Shelby Supercar: welcome to the Tuatara

Jerod Shelby builds fast cars. In 1999, he founded Shelby Supercars (SSC), setting out to produce the fastest production car in the world. On September 13th, 2007, Shelby did just that when his Ultimate Aero reached 257 mph.  This led Bugatti to produce its Veyron Super Sport, which reclaimed the speed crown at 267 mph. Shelby is now upping the ante with the Tuatara (yes I know it’s a rubbish name!).

New supercar will aim to reclaim SSC’s title as maker of the world’s fastest production car.

The name, as it is explained in the video above featuring company found Shelby, is derived from the Maori name for a certain type of lizard native to New Zealand. This reptile has the fastest evolving DNA of any creature, hence, SSC chose it for the newly christened Tuatara in order to communicate how much the car has changed from its predecessor – the SSC Ultimate Aero.

We don’t yet have too many facts, but SSC say the spec is as follows:

SSC Tuatara Specs

Body: Carbon Fiber
Engine 7 Liter DOHC V8
Twin Turbo
~ 1350hp
Transmission: 7-Speed Manual H-Pattern or 7-Speed SMG Paddle Shift
Triple Disc Carbon Clutch
Chassis: Carbon Cab
Carbon Sub-Frames
Aluminum Crash Structures
Wheels: One-Piece Carbon Fiber, Standard

Oh and speed, there’s whispers of 275mph…really!  Only time will tell, even if it does not beat the Veyron’s record, you’ve got to admit it looks pretty beautiful.
